SCLEROTHERAPY

Varicose veins and spider veins are cosmetic problems that also have important health implications when they are not treated early. They are usually formed due to aging or occupational hazards that impede the flow of blood from the veins in the lower body. As a result, the valves within the veins become distended, and result in pooling of blood within the veins. This makes them more prominent, particularly in the legs where the effect of gravity is more.

When left untreated for a long time, varicose veins become itchy and may even ulcerate. Sclerotherapy is a treatment modality that involves the use of a substance that will make the veins shrink leading to resolution of the condition.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Some of the noted benefits of the procedure include:

  • Short procedure
  • Safe procedure
  • Prevents future complications with varicose veins
  • Minimal pain
  • Improves self confidence

About The Procedure

Though it is often thought of as a new treatment method, sclerotherapy has been in use since the early 1600s. At this point, an acid was injected into the vein, resulting in the formation of a clot that then resulted in permanent damage to the involved vein.

Since then, safer and more effective methods of sclerotherapy have been developed. Today, the process involves injecting a special sclerosing solution into the vein. This causes it to shrink almost immediately, and then dissolves over a period of a few weeks. The body will naturally absorb the products of the dissolution.

Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive technique and often takes less than ten minutes to complete. Side effects are uncommon, and individuals can usually go back to their daily lives within a few days. Current medical practice has identified sclerotherapy as the gold standard in the treatment of small varicose veins as well as spider veins.

After the therapy, you will be required to wear compressive stockings for around two weeks. You will also be encouraged to walk regularly during this period to accelerate the process of healing. In case the varicose veins are significant, you may need to go for more than one treatment. Individuals sessions are usually a few weeks apart. Confirmation of adequate treatment is done using an ultrasound scan.

Sclerotherapy | FAQ

Will sclerotherapy affect blood circulation in my limbs?

Lower limbs have a deep and superficial vein system. Varicose veins are as a result of damage to the superficial veins, which are then obliterated using the procedure. Blood will still flow to the heart through the deep veins, so vascular compromise is not likely.

Are the varicose veins likely to re-emerge?

The procedure permanently removes the abnormal veins, so the risk of recurrence is minimal.

Is this an approved FDA medical procedure?

Sclerotherapy is approved by the FDA.
